Show Summary
Urinetown: The Musical is a hilarious, irreverent musical comedy that takes place in a world where a devastating water shortage has made private toilets a thing of the past. Citizens must pay to use public facilities controlled by the powerful Urine Good Company—and anyone who breaks the rules risks being sent to the mysterious and dreaded “Urinetown.”
When idealistic young Bobby Strong decides that enough is enough, he leads an unlikely group of citizens in a fight for freedom. Complicating matters, Bobby falls for Hope Cladwell, the kindhearted daughter of the very man whose company controls the city’s public amenities.
With a clever score, outrageous humor, and plenty of heart, Urinetown playfully pokes fun at musical-theater conventions while exploring themes of greed, power, rebellion, and what happens when limited resources collide with unlimited human wants. Despite its deliberately unglamorous title, Urinetown is a smart, energetic, and surprisingly funny show filled with memorable characters, big musical numbers, and a story that refuses to take itself—or musical theater—too seriously.
